What Is Powder Coating and When Does It Make Sense?

Short answer

Powder coating is a dry finishing process where powder is applied to a prepared metal surface and then cured to form a hard, even film. It makes sense for fabricated steel, gates, frames, components and most general metalwork where you want a durable, colour-consistent finish.

How the process works

The item is first prepared — usually by abrasive blasting — so the surface is clean and correctly profiled. Powder is then applied and the item is cured, which melts and hardens the powder into a continuous film.

Because the coating is cured rather than air-dried, the finished surface is generally tougher and more consistent than a comparable wet-painted finish on the same item.

When powder coating suits the job

Powder coating is a strong choice where appearance and general durability both matter.

  • Fabricated steel components and assemblies
  • Driveway, pedestrian and commercial gates
  • Balustrades, handrails and frames
  • Batch or repeat components needing consistent colour
  • Refinishing existing metalwork that is structurally sound

When something else may suit better

Items in harsh industrial or heavy coastal service are often better served by a protective coating system chosen for corrosion resistance rather than appearance. Items that cannot be handled or cured in a workshop also need a different approach.

Limitations worth noting

  • The item must be able to be handled, prepared and cured in the workshop.
  • Preparation quality, not the powder itself, usually determines how long the finish lasts.
  • Masking requirements for threads and machined faces should be identified before work starts.
