Caring for Powder Coated Metalwork

Westforge Works · Reviewed 2026-10-03

Short answer

Rinse and gently wash powder coated items regularly with mild soapy water and a soft cloth, avoid abrasive pads and harsh solvents, and deal with chips or scratches early. Items near the coast or exposed to dust, chemicals or irrigation water generally need more frequent washing.

Routine cleaning

  • Rinse off dust, salt and debris with fresh water
  • Wash with mild detergent and a soft cloth or brush
  • Rinse thoroughly so residue does not sit on the surface
  • Avoid abrasive pads, strong solvents and high-pressure jets close to the surface

Coastal and harsh environments

Salt spray, reticulation water, fertiliser and industrial fallout can sit on surfaces and shorten coating life. Washing more often, particularly on sheltered areas that rain does not reach, helps the finish last.

Chips, scratches and damage

Damage that exposes bare steel lets corrosion start under the surrounding coating. Small marks can often be touched up; larger or widespread damage may mean stripping, preparing and recoating the item.

Limitations worth noting

  • Maintenance needs vary with the environment, coating product and how the item is used.
  • Any product manufacturer's care guidance for a specific coating takes priority.
  • Whether an item should be touched up, recoated or replaced is assessed case by case.
